In the mid-1970s, at the height of Cold War unease, a Saturday morning cartoon quietly crossed a line most children’s programming never dared approach. The Planet of the Apes Cartoon That Accused the USA of Nuclear War (1975) - YouTube  “ Return to the Planet of the Apes ,” which aired briefly in 1975, transformed a franchise known for spectacle into a vehicle for political anxiety, embedding fears of nuclear war, militarism, and national guilt into animated form.  While marketed to kids, the series drew heavily from Pierre Boulle ’s original novel, presenting a technologically advanced Ape City , bleak ruins of New York, and unsettling storylines involving chemical weapons and mutated Under-dwellers who eerily chant “USA” from beneath the rubble.
