Decades-Old Missing Child Case Ends With Arrest After Bodycam Footage Shows Florida Woman Taken Into Custody
A cold case dating back more than 40 years has taken a dramatic turn after authorities arrested a Florida woman accused of abducting her own daughter in 1983. Body-worn camera video released by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office shows 66-year-old Debra Newton being approached and handcuffed by deputies while walking her dog in The Villages, Florida, where she lived under the alias “Sharon Nealy” for decades. In the footage, neighbors initially mistake the law-enforcement presence for a casual visit before deputies inform Newton there is a warrant for her arrest related to a missing child case from Kentucky.
The case began in Louisville, Kentucky, in April 1983, when Newton allegedly left with her then-3-year-old daughter, Michelle Marie Newton, telling family she was relocating to Georgia for a job. Michelle was reported missing that year and the case went cold as both mother and daughter vanished, even being removed from missing-child databases by 2005. A renewed investigation in the mid-2010s and an age-progressed image ultimately sparked renewed interest, but the breakthrough came in 2025 after a Crime Stoppers tip led authorities to Florida, where DNA comparisons confirmed Newton’s identity.
Once in custody, authorities informed Michelle—now 46—that she had been listed as missing and that Newton was her biological mother. Michelle has since been reunited with her father, Joseph Newton, for the first time in more than four decades, an emotional moment her family described as indescribable. Newton now faces a felony custodial interference charge, a charge that carries no statute of limitations in Kentucky, and she has appeared in court following her arrest.
This case highlights both the persistence of cold-case investigations and the evolving role of public tips, forensic resources like DNA, and interagency cooperation in resolving long-unanswered mysteries.
