Crewless “Ghost Boat” Drifts Through Washington Ferry Terminal in Unusual Sight
A large, unmanned vessel described as a 100-foot “ghost boat” drifted through the Mukilteo ferry terminal in Washington state, creating a potential safety hazard for Washington State Ferries and other marine traffic. The vessel was seen moving silently into the ferry approach without any crew or navigational lights attached, prompting concern from ferry workers and the Coast Guard.
Video shared by Washington State Ferries shows the empty, unlit boat approaching near the Tokitae ferry dock early in the morning, forcing the ferry to approach slowly under its own lights until the drifted vessel moved away. Authorities emphasized that a large, uncrewed vessel in these waters can pose serious navigational risks, especially at night or in poor visibility.
Coast Guard officials later located and took the unmanned vessel, identified as the Mary B, into tow after it had broken free from its mooring at a pier near Everett. It was the only one of three boats that escaped its berth and drifted out to Puget Sound, according to reporting. No damage to the ferry terminal or injuries were reported, and the situation was resolved without incident.
While unusual, drifting ships and unattended vessels are not unheard of—similar “ghost ship” sightings have been documented in other parts of the world when boats lose power, break free of anchors, or are abandoned at sea. Authorities are reminding mariners of the dangers posed by unlit and uncrewed watercraft and urging proper securing of vessels to prevent future drift incidents.
