"We Have Never Seen Anything Like This Before..." - Victor Davis Hanson

Victor Davis Hanson uses that line —

“We have never seen anything like this before”

In this video, Victor Davis Hanson, a distinguished historian and classicist, is known for his
As a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, he offers sharp insights into the lessons of history, the decline of empires, and the challenges facing modern society. Through his books, lectures, and public talks,
he explores the intersection of history, politics, and culture.

— When he’s describing a moment in American history where every major institution is shifting at the same time, creating a kind of political and cultural pressure the country wasn’t designed to handle. And he’s not talking about just one issue.

Hanson usually means the stacking of crises all happening simultaneously: prosecutors targeting political rivals, the border collapsing under waves of illegal entry, cities unable to enforce basic law and order, universities captured by ideological activism, the media losing credibility, and a government apparatus that seems to protect one political faction while punishing another. In his view, what makes this moment unprecedented is not each issue by itself — America has seen corruption, riots, bad elections, and political trials before — but the fact that all of them are happening at once, feeding each other, and being normalized as if it’s the new American baseline.

Hanson’s warning is that the republic can survive one institutional failure, even two, but when the judiciary, the executive branch, the media, education, and public trust all collapse together, the nation enters territory where the Founders assumed citizens and leaders would never allow themselves to go.
