Since we've been on the subject of Nuclear War....

I thought it pertinent to look into what radiation can actually do... That is, if you're not lucky enough to die.

In a world where nuclear bombs have blanketed the earth in radiation, life would not end—it would mutate. The survivors, both human and animal, would become part of a harsh evolutionary crucible, where the rules of biology are rewritten by exposure, adaptation, and desperation. Much like in Chernobyl, frogs might darken to near-black, their melanin-rich skin not just shielding them from UV, but acting like organic armor against gamma and beta rays. Over time, dogs and mammals might develop rapid DNA repair mechanisms, not from intelligent design but sheer survival pressure, forming castes of bio-adapted creatures that seem engineered but are entirely natural—a strange mirror of artificial selection driven by catastrophe.

Birds and insects—our most sensitive species—would likely show the first signs of collapse: twisted beaks, deformed wings, smaller cranial volumes, and plummeting reproduction rates. Silent forests would follow. In this fragile quiet, edge-case fungi like Radiomyces fortis would rise, absorbing ionizing radiation and thriving in toxic wastelands. These organisms would blur the line between plant and parasite, hinting at an ecosystem where radiation becomes a currency of survival, not just a death sentence.

The atmosphere itself would be choked by particles, dimming the sun, shifting plant life to low-light, fast-mutating forms. Humans, if any remain above ground, would suffer chronic illness, birth defects, and a psychological toll akin to post-apocalyptic trauma. Underground enclaves might exist, but those above would be the Radiant Wild—populations of altered survivors with thickened skin, resilient blood, and perhaps even a higher resistance to cancer—no longer fully Homo sapiens, but something new, something born of fire and fallout.

This world wouldn’t resemble Mad Max—it would resemble Chernobyl multiplied, a planet of shadows, mutations, and haunting beauty—where the very laws of life pivot around radiation, adaptation, and silent endurance.
