Trump To Be SENTENCED in New York Case Before Inauguration
President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on January 10, 2025, in New York for 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made during the 2016 election. This sentencing date falls just ten days before his inauguration.
The charges stem from payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to conceal an "alleged" affair, with the intent to influence the 2016 presidential election. In May 2024, a jury convicted Trump on all counts.
Judge Juan Merchan has indicated that Trump is unlikely to face imprisonment, fines, or probation. An "unconditional discharge" is anticipated, meaning Trump would have a felony conviction without additional penalties. Trump has the option to attend the sentencing in person or virtually.
Trump's legal team sought to dismiss the case, citing presidential immunity, but the judge ruled that such immunity does not apply to a president-elect. They plan to appeal the conviction and may seek intervention from higher courts, including the Supreme Court.
This situation is unprecedented, marking the first time a president-elect will be sentenced for felony convictions before taking office. Despite the legal challenges, Trump secured a second term in the 2024 election. The sentencing is not expected to impede his inauguration, as a presidential pardon would not apply to state-level convictions.
