Gov. DeSantis vetoes immigration bill from Ft Myers

On January 29, 2025, during a roundtable event in Fort Myers, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his intention to veto a recently passed immigration bill known as the "Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy (TRUMP) Act."

The legislation, which allocates $500 million to enhance state and local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, includes provisions to establish a state immigration enforcement office under the authority of Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson. Governor DeSantis criticized this structure, stating, "Agriculture has not exactly been known for immigration enforcement, so it's almost like the fox guarding the hen house. It was bizarre."

DeSantis expressed concerns that the bill would undermine existing immigration enforcement efforts and diminish gubernatorial authority over immigration matters. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the law and protecting Floridians, asserting that his administration has been proactive in addressing illegal immigration. The governor's opposition to the bill highlights a growing rift within Florida's Republican leadership regarding the state's approach to immigration policy.
