Lawmakers Demand Answers on Treasury Department Cyber Breach
In December 2024, the U.S. Treasury Department experienced a significant cybersecurity breach attributed to Chinese state-sponsored hackers. The attackers exploited vulnerabilities in a third-party security service, BeyondTrust, to gain unauthorized access to Treasury workstations and unclassified documents. Upon discovering the breach on December 8, the Treasury Department promptly disabled the compromised service and initiated an investigation in collaboration with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Preliminary findings suggest that the hackers, identified as an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group linked to China, did not access classified information, and there is no evidence of ongoing unauthorized access.
