Another incident was when Oh Chong-song, a 25-year-old border guard, tried to escape in 2017. His desperate run across the border to South Korea highlighted his personal misery and the harsh realities of life in North Korea. He was shot five times during his escape and was later found to have serious health problems caused by infections with large parasitic worms. This revealed not only the poor living conditions but also the extreme lengths to which he would go, driven by a deep fear of a potential war with the United States.
