In May 2025, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced that over 300 of its staff members have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that the majority were teachers, medics, and aid workers , many of whom died with their families while sheltering in or near UN facilities. This figure marks the highest staff death toll in UN history and highlights the intensity of the conflict. UNRWA operates essential services across Gaza and serves as a cornerstone for refugee support, including schools, clinics, and food aid programs.
