The distance, the difference in feel between the ground shots and shot of the face, part color part black and white, the reactions of something that is close enough to basically eat them or squash them. Anyone else would scream and run for their lives. What are they waiting for him to talk? The whole neighborhood would be out, or I would be getting them out.
