State officials have given the green light to new regulations known as "toilet-to-tap," which permit water agencies to collect wastewater from residences, treat it for reuse, and distribute it back to households to optimize the state's water resources.
Darrin Polhemus, the director of the Division of Drinking Water and the State Water Resources Control Board, expressed confidence in the quality of the recycled water, stating that it will be "the highest quality water delivered in the state when it’s done," as reported by the NY Post.
Officials insist that the recycled water is safe, attributing its safety to three thorough treatment stages. The treatment process reportedly eliminates pathogens and viruses so effectively that minerals must be reintroduced to restore taste to the water.
Darrin Polhemus emphasized the redundancy of the treatment system, stating, "If one fails, there’s still two remaining in its place as backups to make sure nothing goes untreated."
