Sakurajima volcano erupts for hours, sending ash 3,000 meters into the sky
On May 15, 2025, Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupted dramatically, sending a massive ash plume soaring approximately 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) into the sky. The eruption began at the Minamidake summit crater around 10:45 a.m. and persisted for about 17 hours, concluding at 4:00 a.m. on May 16. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) maintained a Level 3 alert, advising residents to avoid the volcano due to potential hazards such as volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows within a 2-kilometer radius of the crater.
