UNRWA Confirms Over 300 Staff Killed Amid Israeli Strikes in Gaza, Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

In May 2025, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced that over 300 of its staff members have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that the majority were teachers, medics, and aid workers , many of whom died with their families while sheltering in or near UN facilities. This figure marks the highest staff death toll in UN history and highlights the intensity of the conflict. Sakurajima volcano erupts for hours, sending ash 3,000 meters into the sky

On May 15, 2025, Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupted dramatically, sending a massive ash plume soaring approximately 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) into the sky. The eruption began at the Minamidake summit crater around 10:45 a.m. and persisted for about 17 hours, concluding at 4:00 a.m. on May 16. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) maintained a Level 3 alert, advising residents to avoid the volcano due to potential hazards such as volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows within a 2-kilometer radius of the crater. Ashfall was reported in surrounding areas, including parts of Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki prefectures.
