LGBTQ Organization Cancels Florida Pride Parade Over Bill Banning Children from Lewd Adult Performances
The group was worried that Governor Ron DeSantis would sign the Senate Bill 1438 into law before the event. If signed, the venue would lose its liquor license and the organization would lose its non-profit status if it allowed children to attend the event.
The legislation, which DeSantis is expected to sign, does not explicitly state that drag performances in front of minors are prohibited, but defines “adult live performances” as those that depict or simulate nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or specific sexual activities.
The cancelled parade was supposed to be part of PrideFest. The other events that were part of the festival were converted from all ages to 21 plus. The Pride Alliance of the Treasure Coast, the organization behind the event, has said that it is planning a family-friendly event where LGBTQ youth can “celebrate who they are.” The largest sponsors of PrideFest were the Cleveland Clinic and the YMCA.
