Elon Musk Is Quietly Launching An Artificial Intelligence Company: Report
According to a report by The New York Times, Elon Musk is reportedly working on launching an artificial intelligence (AI) company named X.AI, despite his concerns about the potential negative impacts of the technology. Musk is said to be in discussions with an AI researcher at the University of Toronto, Jimmy Ba, and has hired senior researchers from DeepMind, a Google-owned AI research laboratory, to work at Twitter, which he acquired last year. Musk is also reported to have recruited Igor Babuschkin, a researcher who formerly worked at DeepMind and OpenAI, to develop an alternative to ChatGPT, an OpenAI language processing tool.
Musk has been vocal about his concerns regarding the rapid development of AI in recent weeks, signing an open letter with hundreds of other technology leaders calling for a six-month moratorium on developing AI solutions stronger than GPT-4 to consider the potential effects of the technology. Musk also met with members of Congress on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of federal regulation of AI.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who took part in the discussion with Musk, recently unveiled a broad regulatory framework that will attempt to “increase transparency, responsibility, and accountability” for AI systems while “reducing the potential for misuse” or promoting “misinformation and bias.”
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the technology, studies have shown that AI systems can significantly improve worker productivity. For example, one recent analysis of customer support employees found that generative AI helped workers respond to 14% more chats than their colleagues who did not have access to the system. Amazon also found that coders who used AI computer programming tool Code Whisperer completed tasks 57% faster and were 27% more likely to achieve success than those who did not use the system.
