Georgia Democrat Activist Who Ran for State House of Representatives Arrested for Kidnapping And 

Third-Degree Cruelty to Children

Zephaniah Dwayne Baker, a Georgia Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the state’s House of Representatives, has been arrested by the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office for several charges including kidnapping, cruelty to children, and aggravated assault. The arrest took place on Saturday at approximately 12:45 a.m. The charges against Baker include a felony charge of kidnapping, aggravated assault (disfigure), possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and misdemeanor charges of battery (Family Violence Act) and third-degree cruelty to children. Further information about the alleged crimes has not been disclosed to the public.

Baker has been involved in multiple political campaigns over the years, with his most recent bid being a primary election for the Georgia House of Representatives on May 24, 2022. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Baker has also run for mayor of Columbus three times, finishing in second place in 2018. Additionally, he has previously run for the Georgia House of Representatives in 2008 and 2022 but was defeated in both races.

Baker is also an activist who founded the "Buy-Back the Block Community Program" and has produced and sponsored commercials promoting Black history. The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the arrest by the Drug, Gang, and Fugitive Unit and U.S. Marshals. The investigation was conducted in conjunction with several other law enforcement agencies including the FBI, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, Cobb County Police Department, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, and Phenix City Police Department.
