Another Disastrous Train Derailment Ferryville, Wisconsin
On April 27th, 2023, a major train derailment occurred in Ferryville, Wisconsin, causing several train cars to fall into the Mississippi River. Emergency responders, including Hazmat teams, were dispatched to the scene. As of now, it is unclear what the train cars contained, but it is believed that some of them may contain paint and lithium batteries.
The accident resulted in four people being injured and multiple train cars falling into the river. The situation is particularly concerning as any hazardous materials released could pollute the entire length of the river within the United States.
Local sand and gravel trucks have been mobilized to assist with the response effort. This area has already been grappling with record-setting Mississippi River floods, which are still ongoing.
According to eyewitnesses, the derailment occurred after the rails washed out in front of the train. Two rail cars have been swept downstream, and there are concerns that the lithium cars may also end up in the river.
It is worth noting that the river's water level is much higher than usual for this time of year, measuring almost 25 feet instead of the typical 8 feet. The situation remains fluid, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
