Alabama Childhood Education Secretary Ousted by Governor for Distributing Racist, Woke Book to Preschool Teachers
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey asked Barbara Cooper, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education (ABCDE), to resign after discovering the department was distributing a pre-K educator resource book that contained "woke" content. The book, called the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Developmentally Appropriate Practice Book, 4th edition, discusses topics like systemic and structural racism and the importance of promoting equality for LGBTQ families. Governor Ivey deemed the content "divisive" and "not in line" with her administration's values.
Cooper reportedly did not discontinue use of the book as instructed, leading to her resignation. Dr. Jan Hume will serve as interim secretary while the governor searches for a replacement. The NAEYC released a statement defending the book as a "research-based resource" to help teachers support all children's development.
