Hobbs Appointee Judicial Commission Resigns, Accused Of Questionable Conduct
Catherine Sigmon, who was appointed to the Maricopa County Commission on Trial Court Appointments by Governor Katie Hobbs four months ago, has withdrawn her name from consideration just days before her confirmation hearing was scheduled to take place. The Senate Judiciary Committee cited "disturbing revelations" as the reason for her resignation.
Sigmon's LinkedIn profile indicates that she is the finance manager and co-founder of Save Our Schools in Arizona, a controversial anti-school choice group.
In addition, it was revealed that she co-founded "Civic Engagement Beyond Voting," an organization that attacks conservative Arizona judges and advocates for their removal, despite recommendations of retention from the Commission on Judicial Performance Review.
The Maricopa County Commission, which is mandated by the Arizona Constitution, is responsible for nominating the most qualified judge applicants to the Governor for appointment to the Maricopa County Superior Court, with merit being the primary consideration.
According to Senate Judiciary Chairman Sen. Anthony Kern, the revelations about Sigmon's background emerged during the Committee's review process.
While Sigmon's nomination may have been withdrawn, the incident highlights the importance of vetting nominees thoroughly before confirming them to important positions. The Judiciary Committee's diligence in investigating Sigmon's background underscores their commitment to ensuring that only the most qualified and suitable candidates are appointed to the Maricopa County Superior Court.
