In his 2012 paper titled "Human Engineering and Climate Change," co-authored with Anders Sandberg and Rebecca Roache, Liao explores biomedical modifications to humans aimed at reducing our environmental impact.   One proposal involves inducing an aversion to red meat consumption. Sakurajima volcano erupts for hours, sending ash 3,000 meters into the sky

On May 15, 2025, Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupted dramatically, sending a massive ash plume soaring approximately 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) into the sky. The eruption began at the Minamidake summit crater around 10:45 a.m. and persisted for about 17 hours, concluding at 4:00 a.m. on May 16. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) maintained a Level 3 alert, advising residents to avoid the volcano due to potential hazards such as volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows within a 2-kilometer radius of the crater. Ashfall was reported in surrounding areas, including parts of Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki prefectures.
